Goodness me! Would you pay $3,000 for one of the first Mouse Guard drawings ever created? Well Bleeding Cool found a copy of one of Petersen’s original publications (printed from his home) on ebay for about that much.
Petersen talks about it here on his blog. As you can probably tell from the picture, his style underwent a few changes before it settled on what we know from Mouse Guard today - and fortunately for you learning artists out there, he has a few things to say about how that came about! Definitely worth a read:
“When I stopped trying to draw like the people I admired, and just used their work to inspire me to do better (instead of doing knock-off attempts at their work) better things happened”

With the sell out success of Mouse Guard: Legends of the Guard volume 1, and the upcoming re-print along with volume 2 on the horizon, Nicole Rodrigues’ interview is incredibly timely. Below is an excerpt:
“ “It matters not what you fight, but what you fight for.”
Such is the motto of the Mouse Guard, and underlying theme of the Eisner-winning spin-off Mouse Guard: Legends of the Guard. LotG is an anthology of tall tales told by mouse patrons of the June Alley Inn about the fabled Guard, with each story attempting to outdo the last while meeting three criteria: each story must hold one truth, one lie, and be previously untold in a tavern. David Petersen, writer and artist of the Mouse Guard series, brought together an amazing selection of writers and artists for the first volume of LotG and has done so again for the highly anticipated second volume debuting this month. Featuring contributions from industry legends like Stan Sakai (Usagi Yojimbo), Bill Willingham(Fables), and Rick Geary (The Adventures of Blanche), to up-and-comers like Cory Godbey (Jim Henson’s Labyrinth),Legends of the Guard Volume Two is shaping up to be another amazing chapter in the Guards’ history. We sat down with Petersen at C2E2 to chat more about Legends of the Guard and find out what it’s like to have other creators play in your sandbox.”

Double Book Review
‘Mouse Guard: Fall 1152’ & ‘Mouse Guard: Winter 1152’
Story & Art by: David Petersen
Genre: Juvenile/YA Graphic Novel
Literary Awards: Eisner Award for Best Publication for Kids (2008)
My Rating: ☆☆☆☆☆
Mouse Guard: Fall 1152
Goodreads synopsis: In the world of Mouse Guard, mice struggle to live safely and prosper amongst harsh conditions and a host of predators. Thus the Mouse Guard was formed: more than just soldiers that fight off intruders, they are guides for common mice looking to journey without confrontation from one hidden village to another. The Guard patrol borders, find safeways and paths through dangerous territories and treacherous terrain, watch weather patterns, and keep the mouse territories free of predatory infestation. They do so with fearless dedication so that they might not just exist, but truly live. Saxon, Kenzie and Lieam, three such Guardsmice, are dispatched to find a missing merchant mouse that never arrived at his destination. Their search for the missing mouse reveals much more than they expect, as they stumble across a traitor in the Guard’s own ranks.
Mouse Guard: Winter 1152
Goodreads synopsis: In the Winter of 1152, the Guard face a food and supply shortage threatening the lives of many through a cold and icy season. Saxon, Kenzie, Lieam, and Sadie, led by Celanawe, traverse the snow-blanketed territories acting as diplomats to improve relations between the mouse cities and the Guard. This is a winter not every Guard may survive. Collects the second Eisner-Award winning Mouse Guard series with an all-new epilogue and bonus content.

My Thoughts:
As an artist and a reader, I tend to like graphic novels more than comics or manga. (Let’s not judge or argue about it, please. I just do.) When I saw ‘Mouse Guard: Winter 1152’ at my library I automatically fell in love with the cover art and checked it out. At home, I realized (via Goodreads) that it was the second book in the series so I put the first one on hold and waited impatiently for it to come through so I could pick it up. It’s cover is just as gorgeous. But it’s not just the covers that I loved since David Petersen both wrote the story and created the artwork. The insides of these books are absolutely amazing. Every single frame tells a little bit more of the story while enchanting the eyes with it’s bold splashes of color. They are a beautifully realized world of their own and I am glad that the author took ten years to get this story down on paper and illustrate it.
These are for the younger persuasion and can be found in the juvenile or young-adult graphic novel section of any library, but I believe that readers of all ages can enjoy these books as long as they love fantasy adventures and art. They greatly remind me of ‘The Secrets of Nimh’, the ‘Redwall’ series by Brian Jacques, and an old book I read as a kid called ‘Battle For the Castle’ which also had mice in it. If I had kids, these would be a must on their shelves.

We will also be presenting a panel during C2E2. Please join us!
Sunday, April 28, 1:30 – 2:30p.m., Room W471 Archaia Entertainment Presents: Comics Storytelling and the Lost Art of 3D — Join creators with a special perspective on 3D storytelling in comics for an uncensored discussion of the medium’s benefits and drawbacks, as well as a wide-ranging survey of the highs and lows of 60 years of 3D comics, only at C2E2 2013!
Pioneered by a cabal of industrious creators in the early 1950s, anaglyph 3D comics experienced a boom at roughly the same mid-century moment as 3D movies first appeared in cinemas nationwide. 60 years later, 2012 saw the passing of two of the field’s pioneers: comics legend Joe Kubert, one of the format’s credited inventors, and Ray Zone, the famed conversion artist on the most notable 3D comics of the last 30 years.
To pay tribute to these lost giants and celebrate the 2013 release of their ambitious, all-3D graphic novel The Joyners in 3D from Archaia, writer R.J. Ryan (Syndrome) and New York Times best-selling illustrator David Marquez (All-New X-Men, Ultimate Comics Spider-Man, Syndrome) have invited a panel of creatives from across comics to dig deep into the medium’s checkered history of using 3D as a storytelling tool. The multimedia presentation will include big-screen glimpses of comics’ most famous—and most forgettable—3D projects, as well as a brief, exclusive sneak peek at Ryan & Marquez’s epic 3D melodrama, The Joyners in 3D. Moderated by Word Balloon podcast host John Siuntres.
Every panel attendee receives a free pair of 3D glasses and a coupon to receive a copy of the 2012 Free Comic Book Day hardcover at the Archaia booth (while supplies last)!

Hudspeth (The Resurrectionist, Quirk), Jeffrey Brown (Vador and Son, Top Shelf), Brandon Easton (Roboy, Lion Forge), and Rachel Rawlings (The Maurin Kincaide Series), David Petersen and Royden Lepp will talk about their imaginative Sci-Fi and Fantasy graphic novels!

Ballad of the Ivory Lass from Mouse Guard: Winter 1152 #4. Cause Mouse Guard is fucking amazing!!
Seriously, if you haven’t read this comic series you should. It’s about sentient mice surviving in a feudal age with other sentient animals, some of which would be all to happy to eat mice (sans the humans).
Pretty cool fan song of Mouse Guard! Thanks Kenzie!
Be sure to check out Mouse Guard: Winter 1152 at the Archaia Webstore, your local comic shop, or wherever books are sold!

Saxon, Kenzie, and Lieam go in search of a missing Grain Mouse. (From Mouse Guard Vol. 1: Fall 1152, by David Petersen.)
I got my first tattoo the other day (inspired by Mouse Guard) and I’ll be seeing my guy for a touch up little later… and through this whole experience, the best advice I could give you is that you stay away from your friends until that shit is healed.
HOLY WOW! Awesome Mouse Guard tattoo! It’s always amazing to see how dedicated Mouse Guard fans are!
