From Archaia’s website:

Join us as we explore this missing piece of Jim Henson’s career in a celebration of his creative process. Discovered in the Archives of The Jim Henson Company, Tale of Sand is an original graphic novel adaptation of an unproduced, feature-length screenplay written by Jim Henson and his frequent writing partner, Jerry Juhl. Tale of Sand follows scruffy everyman Mac, who wakes up in an unfamiliar town, and is chased across the desert of the American Southwest by all manners of man and beast of unimaginable proportions. Produced under the complete supervision of Henson Company CEO Lisa Henson, Tale of Sand will allow Henson fans to recognize some of the inspirations and set pieces that appeared in later Henson Company productions.

With art by adaptation by Toronto artist Ramon Perez, five Eisner nominations, and an overwhelming amount of Internet buzz, I decided to place an order for Tale of Sand a few weeks ago.  It arrived in short order, and as I flipped through this oversized tome, I was left to marvel at the artistic tour-de-force contained within.  Given the sheer number of reviews that can easily be found online, I won’t discuss the contents of this book in any great detail other than to say if it intrigues you, I highly recommend checking it out.

What I would like to mention, however, is an interesting side note.  Any regular customer at Comics North in Sudbury may have recently become familiar with the name Terry Pallot as a result of the original art on display.  Terry is a local artist working as an inker in the comic industry.  Interestingly, as I scanned the credits of Tale of Sand upon finishing the book, I discovered Mr. Pallot’s name listed as providing additional inks.  It was very satisfying to learn that this remarkable work had a northern Ontario connection, in addition to a proud place on my shelf.

Furthermore, upon listening to the Loikamania podcast with guest, Ramon Perez, I was also delighted to hear Terry’s name mentioned during discussions regarding the book’s production.  It’s a very enjoyable interview, should anyone care to check it out.

The Gainsville Times has posted up an interesting Cursed Pirate Girl review Alison Reeger Cook, an excerpt is below:

“I rarely re-read books once I’m finished with them. But every now and then, I come across a published work that not only do I want to revisit, but I feel as if I have to in order to pick up on things I am positive I missed the first read through. One of those books is Volume One of the graphic novel series, “Cursed Pirate Girl.” It is written and illustrated by Jeremy Bastian, whose artwork is so intricate and meticulous that unless you sit with a magnifying glass for days on end, you are bound to miss his gorgeous details on the first pass.”

“Mumbai Confidential Book 1: Good Cop, Bad Cop” - Graphic Novel Review by FBC’s Sam Rhodes!

I’m not a noir expert, but I’ve seen the classics: Chinatown, The Maltese Falcon, Touch of Evil, Out of the Past.  You get the idea.  I love this genre, I love the thrills, I love the characters, the twists, the violence, and treachery.  It’s a genre where nothing means what you think it means, and everyone has a secret, a dark past, and ulterior motives. It’s a genre with a deep and ongoing history, and Archaia’s new hardcover graphic novel, Mumbai Confidential, from writer Saurav Mohapatra and artist Vivek Shinde is an inky, burning fuse of a story that deserves a place alongside the classics.
